in Hongkong only, but yet mora in other parts of China, appeals constantly to kind-hearted people and violates every principle which we hold dear as regards the treatment of defenceless girls. One cannot be surprised that protests should be raised by those who see this kind of thing going-of in a British Colony notwithstanding the illegality of slavery and the power which the girls have to set themselves free if they have knowledge and courage to do so. I trust that every effort has been made to counteract these evils and will be continued perseveringly by those who represent our country there.
